Citrus Licensing Program

Citrus Tree
Dr. Mikeal Roose, UCR citrus breeding program

The University of California citrus scion breeding program has been pursuing seedless mandarin breeding for several decades. Under the direction of Dr. Mikeal Roose who heads the scion and rootstocks citrus breeding program, he and Timothy Williams (co-Breeder) bred and identified over 150 selections as having potential that could lead to new varieties, and patented seven in the US. The most promising selection, released in 2005 and commercialized worldwide, is named ‘Tango’. This is sold in the US under several citrus brands including the two largest. Outside the US, the UC-patented varieties are protected and commercialized in 25+ counties.
