Welcome to the Conflict of Interest (COI) Management Plan Agreement Resource Guide. This page supports research investigators in managing conflicts of interest in accordance with federal, state, and university policies. Our goal is to promote transparency, integrity, and compliance in UCR research activities.
Please note that the procedures and responsibilities outlined below apply only if they are specifically included in your individual COI Management Plan. Investigators are only required to follow what is listed in their management plan agreement.
Provided are procedures and processes to help you comply with your COI management plan agreement.
Disclosure of Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI)
- Investigators must disclose their FCOI in all publications and presentations.
- Suggested Disclosure Language:
"Dr. Highlander has a financial interest in ENTITY, which is funding this research study." - Save documentation such as:
- DOI number of the journal
- Date of presentation
- Presentation slide deck referencing COI disclosure.
- For journal specific instructions, refer to ICMJE disclosure guidelines
Disclosure to Students and Postdoctoral Scholars
- Investigators must disclosure their FCOI to students, postdoctoral scholars, fellows, and trainees involved in the project.
- Disclosure is emailed via the “Agreement to Work on Research” (Kuali Build Form)
Human Research Subjects
- The FCOI must be disclosed to study participants.
- Informed consent must be obtained by someone not directly supervised by the investigator.
- Disclosure must be included in the IRB protocol and consent forms.
- Suggested Disclosure Language:
"Dr. Highlander has a financial interest in ENTITY, which is funding this research study." - Contact the IRB Office for guidance.
Intellectual Property Rights
- The University of California (UC) retains any intellectual property rights conceived or developed by the Investigator.
- Investigators must comply with:
- UC Patent Policy
- Separation of Entity and UCR Research
- Research conducted by the Entity must not be conducted in UCR facilities.
- UCR research must not be conducted at the Entity’s facilities.
- Investigators must coordinate with UCR to:
- Establish incubator space.
- Rent lab equipment if the Entity is on campus.
- Data Analysis and Oversight Strategy
- Oversight and Monitoring
- An independent monitor or oversight body may be appointed to ensure unbiased research.
- Investigator must:
- Identify a supervisor or unconflicted team.
- Submit an oversight plan to the COI Committee for approval.
- Data Analysis
- Research analysis must use double-blinded data.
- Independent reviewers should conduct data interpretation.
- If the COI affects data analysis:
- Update the department and sponsor with revisions to the research strategy.
- Consider double-blind review or appointing an unconflicted independent reviewer.
